The first novel featuring the Character V.I. Warshawski. It revolves around a case where she is hired by a man who isn’t who he says he is, to find his son and his son’s girlfriend. Then the son turns up dead and, the girl still missing, V.I is fired from the case. She continues to pursue it however, determined to find her. Then she discovers that she is being set up, and the whole thing was a wild goose chase.
V.I. is a smart, savvy private investigator
who keeps those who would limit her at arms length. After all, ‘It’s tough for a man to be condescending when he
doesn’t know your first name.’
She is very much in the same vein as the
classic private detectives, and the book has far more in common with classic
detective noir than with the modern style of psychological thriller. It’s a
good old-fashioned murder mystery, and the protagonist is both engaging and
enjoyable.
